Clear CinCom to develop network design for Hanzelijn

15/01/2008

By the end of 2012, the northern parts of The Netherland will be much closer to Amsterdam and the other urban centers in the west of the country. The "Hanzelijn" will be a new railway connection that permits speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour. Since connections of such high speed pose extra challenges for reliable communications, project developer Mobirail contracted Clear CinCom for the initial planning of the GSM-R (GSM-Rail) network on the ETCS standard.

The first step in the process of setting up a GSM-R network is the translation of real-life requirements, which are often set by governments, into technical design criteria. These functional criteria are at the basis of the Nominal Radio Network Cell Plan. This plan is the basis for a survey in the field, where the currently ongoing development sites are analyzed. These include the ambitious tunnel underneath the Dronter lake. This then leads to a radio network design, which is what the experts at Clear CinCom will return to Mobirail.

In a modern railway infrastructure, on-board communication is vital for security and service. Since even small glitches could compromise safety, the network needs to be highly redundant. To set up a GSM-R network efficiently, special expertise is required. All variables in the environment along the route need to be taken into account. This is why Mobirail - a consortium consisting of KPN and Nokia Siemens - decided on contracting Clear CinCom. This telecommunications consulting company is one of few that has not only extensive expertise but also real-world international experience in GSM-R design, planning, validation and optimization.
